Retreats & Relaxing breaks

If you need to unwind, relax and heal, I believe that a vital part of the process is getting away from familiar surroundings and especially urban environments and being in nature. And it's hard to be more in nature than my chalet on the beach facing the sea.

The chalet is suitable for short breaks on your own, with a partner or with family. The beach here is very flat for a long distance out, making it very safe for young children to play in the water. It is a private beach, shared with a few other chalets. There is also a designated childrens play area, including swings and a sunken boat.

The chalet is located outside Seasalter village on the North Kent coast, on the old coastal road between Whitstable and Faversham. The Isle of Sheppey can be seen 1½ miles across The Swale, and this is a great place for birdlife. The tidal waters of the Swale estuary teem with shellfish and certain specialised plants. These attract huge numbers of birds to feed, especially as the tide goes out. Grey Plover, dunlin, oystercatcher, godwits and curlew all probe the mud for food. Wigeon and Brent geese graze on eelgrass, which grows below the high tide mark. Buntings and finches often search for seeds on the beach. Over the sea wall, look for flocks of golden plover and the occasional short-eared owl or hen harrier hunting for small mammals or unsuspecting birds. The merlin, which eats mainly birds, is also a frequent winter visitor. Whitstable is famous for its oysters, which have been collected there since Roman times, and the town holds an annual Oyster festival. Seasalter itself was the the location of the Battle of Graveney Marsh, the last fighting to take place on mainland British soil. It was a minor skirmish, nobody was killed, and the British soldiers took their prisoners to the Sportsman pub for a beer afterwards!

It is fully equipped for self-catering, and has 3 bedrooms:

• Bed 1 - Double bed
• Bed 2 - Single bed
• Bed 3 - Bunk beds

This is a place to get away from it all and simply swim, walk the coast and countryside - or do nothing at all. There are few amenities in the immediate area. The Sportsman, an excellent Michelin-award gastropub, is a very short walk away. There is a convenience store in Seasalter about 1 mile away, while the nearest major supermarket is in Whitstable about 4.5 miles away.

"All's great here. We've been rowing, collecting stones, walked to Whitstable, cooking outside, ball games and water pistols, and drawing mermaids. Watching the water and the sky is so good for the soul. The wind is up tonight - the perfect lullaby!" (Olivia)

"Fantastic views - charming chalet." (Mike & Sarah)

Chalet hire is £55 for a single night, discounted to £50 per night for stays of 2 or more nights. You will need to bring your own towels and bed linen.

It has easy access from London is via the M2. For those with GPS, the postcode is CT5 4BP.
